Saturday October 14th, 2006 was marked by the death of
the 42nd Canadian soldier killed in Canadas
occupation of Afghanistan. Two more Canadian soldiers
died when a Canadian convoy was attacked with
rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire in southern
Afghanistan. Two more Canadian soldiers were injured
in the battle.
The recent escalation of deadly combat facing Canadian
troops in Afghanistan, especially since the launch of
Operation Medusa, is coupled with a rising death toll
for Afghan people, but we in Canada do not hear about
it. We know only of the conservative estimate that AT
LEAST 1500 Afghans have been killed by NATOs
Canadian-led Operation Medusa alone in the last month.
With every soldier killed in the occupation, the
Canadian military seeks to recruit more young people
from Canada to send to Afghanistan to kill Afghan
people fighting for freedom from the occupation.
The September 19th Emergency Picket Action will be
organized as part of the 5th Lower-Mainland-wide
Student Week Against War & Occupation organized by
MAWO & campus antiwar groups at universities, colleges
and high schools. From October 16th-27th students will
be holding petition drives and educational events
against Canadas war drive in Afghanistan to say: NOT
ONE MORE LIFE FOR THE CANADIAN WAR DRIVE!
MAWO is calling for the 22nd picket protest action at
the Canadian Armed Forces Recruitment Center since the
July 2005 announcement that Canada would be doubling
its forces in Afghanistan. On Thursday October 19th we
will protest these deaths and the further destruction
that is assured by the continuation of war and
occupation.
