HIGHWAY OF TEARS:
MISSING WOMEN ON HIGHWAY 16 ART EXHIBITION
Opening:
Friday, April 7th
7 pm
Smithers Art Gallery
(Smithers BC)
Over thirty visual artists from across the northwest
have contributed work that explores violence against
women and how we respond to it. All are welcome to
come to the launch; it begins with a traditional
welcoming to the territory and will include a
performance by the Muheim School All Nations Drummers,
a First Nations smudging ceremony, and a reading at 8
pm by Vancouver writer, Maggie DeVries, whose book,
Missing Sarah, is the story of her sister, one of the
women lost from the Downtown Eastside. DeVries will be
making her own pilgrimage as she travels through the
region giving readings in Prince George, Terrace, and
Prince Rupert as well.
Concurrently with the exhibit, which will be in
Smithers until April 29, Linda Stringfellow and Perry
Rath will be facilitating a community response to
the show and the themes it raises. Stringfellow has
secured a Main Street location where schools, social
service agencies, and any interested groups or
individuals will be welcomed to help create a piece
that will stay in the community and create ongoing
dialogue around the issues. Those interested are
invited to a meeting at the Smithers Art Gallery,
Saturday, April 8 at 2 pm.
For more information, contact Linda Stringfellow by
email - stringfellowl at hotmail.com - or by phone: 250
847-8766.
