On Dec. 18, Evo Morales, the leader of the MAS (Movement Towards
Socialism), was elected President of Bolivia with just over 50 percent
of the popular vote. The election of an indigenous leader as President
has raised the popular movement’s hopes for radical change. Will
Morales, who moderated his discourse duting the election, fulfill
popular hopes?

Jeff Webber has lived in Bolivia researching and working with popular
movements in the city of El Alto, which is at the centre of the
country’s radical social movements, returning in September 2005. Jeff
writes frequently on Bolivia for New Socialist
(http://www.newsocialist.org) and other publications including Znet. He
is currently an editor of New Socialist magazine.
