MAWO Statement in Support of BC Teachers and their
Union in Confronting the War at Home.

In these times, poor, working and oppressed people
across the globe face daily attacks from imperialist
countries through war and occupation. At the same
time, the governments which are leading the plunder
and destruction in Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti and
elsewhere are also attacking those living within their
own countries. In Canada money is being stripped from
social programs, from funding to education, healthcare
and jobs in order to pump 26.8 billion annually into
the military and the expansion of the Canadian war
drive. Canada has just upped their funding to war and
increased their military presence in Afghanistan with
the addition of 2000 more troops by February 2006.

Those on the frontlines of being attacked at home are
working people. Particularly today, after constant
assaults on working people; from the Hospital
Employees Union, to the Telecommunication Workers
Union, to the Canadian Media Guild, now the BC
Teachers Federation (BCTF) has been pushed into a
massive strike by the provincial Liberal government.
The government is even refusing to sit down at a table
with the BCTF, representing teachers to negotiate a
decent collective agreement.

On October 17th 2005, over 20,000 teachers and
supporters descended on the BC legislature to demand
an end to the attacks by the Liberal government.
Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO)
supported the struggle of teachers and joined the
march and rally in Victoria on October 17. MAWO’s
solidarity was reflected on the front page of the
Province Newspaper with a picture of the crowd
including MAWO’s banners, which added the voice of the
anti-war movement to this struggle.

Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO)
understands that the foundation of attacks on working
people at home and abroad have the same root. As the
government of Canada attempts to head off a
deteriorating economy through setting up to plunder
the resources of oppressed countries, they also open
another front in this war; this time, the front at
home. The first four years of the BC Liberal
government’s rule saw attacks on unions, social
programs and all oppressed layers of society in BC. A
few of these attacks included elimination of funding
to women’s centers, lifting of the tuition freeze,
closing of hospitals and 113 elementary and secondary
schools, and cutting $881 million of funding to the
ministries of Human Resources, Children and Family
Development; and Community, Aboriginal and Women’s
Services.

Today the BC Liberals have rammed through Bill 12 to
deem the teachers job action as an “illegal” strike.
The Liberals have ignored their responsibility to deal
with the teachers, who haven’t had a negotiated
contract since 2002, and have attempted to shut down
the teacher’s fightback by legislating it “illegal”.
Mobilization Against War and Occupation calls on the
anti-war movement to stand beside the BC teacher and
all those fighting the war at home to demand: MONEY
FOR JOBS NOT FOR WAR! MONEY FOR EDUCATION NOT FOR WAR!
STOP THE WAR AT HOME!
