VANCOUVER CELEBRATES AND COMMEMORATES 
THE LIVES OF ERNESTO “CHE” GUEVARA 
& Other Latin American Heroes

This October will mark the 38th anniversary of the
death of Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Che is a well-known
and celebrated revolutionary thinker, who helped lead
the Cuban revolution in 1959, which overthrew the
oppressive dictator Batista. On October 8th 1967 Che
was wounded and captured in Bolivia. The following
day, he was executed. Today, Che Guevara continues to
be a hero for all people fighting for social justice
in Latin America.  

Since his death, October 8th has since become a day of
commemoration and tribute to all revolutionary
combatants in Latin America who fought the same fight
as Che did, for social justice and a better life- and
died for the same goal of independence. 

This is one of the first times people in Vancouver
will come together to celebrate this day, which is
very important and dear to the heart of people
throughout Latin America. In Vancouver, we will be
coming together on October 7th to bring together
solidarity activists, the Latin American community,
young people and all those with an interest in
positive change throughout Latin America. 

The evening will include a presentation on Che’s
legacy by the coordinator of Vancouver Communities in
Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC), Tamara Hansen. In
addition to her local solidarity work, Tamara has just
returned from a month with the Che Guevara Work
Brigade in Cuba. La Surda Latin American Collective
will present a slideshow and talk on Latin American
revolutionaries throughout history, who have fought
for change. 

The evening will then move into the performance and
celebration with two well-known local Latin American
guitarists and singers; Ramon Flores and Hugo Rojas. 

“Che Guevara was an important leader not only for the
Cuban people but also for poor and subjugated people
throughout Latin America. He represented a struggle
for justice and national liberation from foreign
powers, which was common across the continent.”
explained event organizer Tamara Hansen. 

Furthermore, Carlos Lopez an organizer with La Surda
explained, “That is why it is so fitting that October
8th is not only a day to recognize the great
achievements of Che, but also the spark of resistance
which has ignited radical movements throughout Latin
America.”

Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba and La
Surda Latin American Collective invite all those
interested to join us on October 7th for an
educational and entertaining evening. Food and drinks
will be available. Admission is by donation.

Este Octubre se conmemora el 38 aniversario de la
muerte de Ernesto Che Guevara; revolucionario
universal quien ayudo a dirigir el triunfo de la
Revolución cubana en 1959, el cual expulso al opresivo
dictador Batista. 
En Octubre 8 de 1967 el Che fue herido y capturado en
Bolivia. Al siguiente día fue ejecutado, hoy en día el
Che continua siendo un héroe para todas las personas
que luchan por la justicia social en Latinoamérica.

Desde su muerte, el 8 de octubre se ha convertido en
el día de la conmemoración y tributo para todos los
revolucionarios combatientes en América latina quienes
estuvieron en la misma lucha: por justicia social y
una vida digna para los pueblos.  Murieron por el
mismo objetivo de independencia y soberanía.

Por primera vez en Vancouver celebraremos unidos este
día, el cual es muy importante  y une los corazones de
los pueblos a través de América latina. En Vancouver, 
nos reuniremos este 7 de Octubre  en fraternidad; la
comunidad latinoamericana, los jóvenes y  todos
aquellos interesados en cambios positivos para toda la
América Latina.

La noche incluirá una presentación sobre el legado del
Che Guevara por el coordinador de Comunidades de
Vancouver en solidaridad con Cuba (CVSC), Tamara
Hansen, sumando a su trabajo de solidaridad local,
ella ha regresado recientemente de la Brigada de
Trabajo Che Guevara en Cuba. El Colectivo
Latinoamericano La Surda,  realizará una presentación
multimedia sobre los revolucionarios latinoamericanos
que han luchado por transformaciones sociales.

La noche continuara con la celebración y presentación
de dos conocidos guitarristas y cantantes locales:
Ramon Flores y Hugo Rojas, además de la presentación
del poeta chileno Oscar Villalobos.

“Che Guevara fue un importante líder no solo del
pueblo cubano sino también de los pueblos pobres y
subyugados de América Latina, el representa la lucha
por la justicia y la liberación nacional de la
poderosa sumisión extranjera el cual es común a lo
largo del continente” explico la organizadora del
evento Tamara Hansen.

Además, Carlos López, miembro de La Surda explico “es
por eso que el 8 de octubre no es solo un dia de
reconocimiento a los grandes logros del Che, también
es el reconocimiento de la lucha ejemplar de
resistencia contra el imperialismo la cual liberan los
pueblos en Latinoamérica.”

Comunidades de Vancouver en solidaridad con Cuba
(CVSC) y el colectivo la Surda invitan a todos
aquellos interesados a unirse este 7 de Octubre a esta
educativa y entretenida noche. Habrá Comida y Bebidas.
La admisión será por donación.
