After the International Day of Action... come out to the next meeting of Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) to organize anti war actions in Vancouver for the future!
 
Next MAWO Meeting
Date: Wednesday March 23
Time: 6:30pm
Place: Britannia Community Center (1661 Napier St)
 
This weekend MAWO organized 2 successful actions, back-to-back, to mark the 2nd anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and stood in solidarity with people in Iraq by mobilizing and educating against war and occupation. Saturday saw hundreds of students, people of color and immigrants and refugees rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery hearing speakers from student unions across the Lower Mainland, Indigenous organizers along with international student protest performances and hip hop performers from Vancouver showing the depth of the human spirit and diversity of our resistance.
 
Chanting and waving signs and banners, the march arrived in an explosion of energy at Sunset Beach, doubling the crowd of other protesters gathered there. A surprise element that some MAWO organizers brought to the international day of action was the unfurling of a huge banner from the West side of the Burrard St bridge. The banner, over 50 feet long faced the protesters below and read "US/UK Out of Iraq!", "Mobilization Against War and Occupation MAWO" and got the attention of protestors gathered and major media as well, as reported in "The Province" newspaper on Sunday. 
 
On Sunday, MAWO organized our 4th major conference to assess the situation of imperialism in the world today, the anti war movement so far and tasks and perspectives for the future. Many people from Saturday's rally and march participated and came to discuss and debate the direction and focus for building the most effective anti war movement. This conference was an essential component of the mobilizations for the weekend of March 19 and 20 to advance our understanding and assessment of our anti war work. 
 
The era of war and occupation does not stop at the occupation of Iraq, and the antiwar movement does not happen only on March 19 and 20 - come out to the MAWO meeting this week and organize for the future!
