PRESS CONFERENCE TO BEGIN VANCOUVER’S PARTICIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR THE EXTRADITION OF ANTI-CUBA TERRORIST LUIS POSADA CARRILES:

Monday, June 13th will see people in Vancouver taking to the streets and organizing the only rally in Canada as part of the International Day of Action demanding the extradition of anti-Cuba terrorist Luis Posada Carriles. Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC), with the endorsement of many Latin-American solidarity, student, and community organizations, is organizing Vancouver’s participation. The day will begin at 10 am with a press conference at the Roundhouse Community Center, and continue with a rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery (Robson St. @ Hornby St.) starting at 4:30 pm.

 

For several months, Posada, a notorious, admitted, and CIA-trained anti-Cuba terrorist, has been living openly in Miami, Florida. He is responsible for multiple acts of terror throughout Latin America, including the vicious 1976 bombing of an Air Cubana flight which killed all 73 people onboard, as well as numerous assassination attempts against Cuban President Fidel Castro.

 

Venezuela has formally filed an extradition request for Posada, as he escaped from prison in Venezuela while awaiting trial for bombing the Air Cubana flight. The United States government has arrested Posada only for illegally entering the U.S. and has refused the extradition request.

 

“The hypocrisy of the U.S. government’s ‘war on terrorism’ and ‘anti-terrorist’ policies are clearly exposed as lies by their protection and support of Posada,” emphasized VCSC coordinator Tamara Hansen, “We demand that the U.S. extradite Posada to Venezuela immediately.” 

 

Canadian resident Fabio Di Celmo was also a victim of Posada-organized terrorism, when a bomb exploded inside of the hotel he was visiting in Havana in 1997. Posada has publicly admitted to organizing the deadly attack. The Canadian government has so far taken no public position on the murder, or Posada’s recent resurfacing in Miami.
 “If the Canadian government is really serious about human rights and ‘fighting terrorism’ it should take immediate action and call the U.S. ambassador for a explanation as to why they are protecting an anti-Cuba terrorist,” stated VCSC organizer Noah Fine, “The Canadian government must demand the immediate return of Posada to Venezuela - in respect for international law and the extradition treaty already in place between the two countries.”
 

The press conference will feature video footage of recent testimony by families of the victim’s of Posada’s attacks, and include the following presenters:

 

Thomas Davies, Organizer with the Free the Cuban Five Committee – Vancouver, will explain the past and present of U.S sponsored terrorism against Cuba, the consequences of the U.S “war on terror” on the people of Latin-America, and the case of five anti-terrorist Cubans currently imprisoned in United States jails.

 

Tamara Hansen, coordinator of VCSC, will elaborate on Posada’s long history of terrorism against Cuba and other Latin-American countries, the Canadian governments troubling silence on the case, and VCSC’s newly launched petition campaign demanding the extradition of Posada to Venezuela
