>From June 8th to 12th Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) is organizing a hip hop festival against war and occupation. This completely free festival will be held in five different venues and will feature more than 25 local hip hop artists, MCs, DJs, break dancers and graffiti artists.

Every show of MAWO’s Hip Hop Festival Against War and Occupation will be a cultural showcase against war and occupation. The Hip Hop Festival Against War and Occupation features people and groups from all around the world and from all communities including internationally renowned Punjabi hip hop crew Signia, Latino hip hoppers like Pablucci and Platino Latino Productions, Indigenous hip hoppers Sunday School Dropoutz, and East Vancouver-local high school hip hop crews like The Main Offenders and youth break dance groups.

MAWO organizer Ivan Drury explained, “Representing the international struggles of oppressed people for dignity and self determination is at the core of the anti-war movement that Mobilization Against War and Occupation is committed to building. The Hip Hop crews performing at this festival represent the communities in Vancouver and in the world that have been the hardest hit by the current era of war and occupation – young people, people from the third world and especially Indigenous hip hoppers.”

MAWO’s Hip Hop Festival Against War and Occupation is groundbreaking for the anti-war movement in Canada as well as for the hip hop community.

“The links between hip hop culture and war and occupation have never been more clear than today,” said Hip Hop Festival Against War and Occupation spokesperson Nicole Burton. “From urban youth of all backgrounds to Indigenous reservations across Canada to the Gaza Strip in Palestine, hip hop is blowing up as part of a movement for dignity and justice for people who are oppressed by war and occupation. For the first time in Canada, MAWO is bringing the anti-war movement and hip hop directly together in a festival to strengthen, popularize and diversify the politics and makeup of both movements.”

On top of massive support from within the hip hop scene in Vancouver, MAWO’s Hip Hop Festival Against War and Occupation has found incredible broad support from sixteen endorsers including the City of Burnaby.

MAWO’s Hip Hop Festival Against War and Occupation is endorsed by: City of Burnaby, Exclaim! Magazine, Capilano Students Union, Terminal City Newspaper, Fire This Time Newspaper, Republic Newspaper, CJSF Radio 90.1 FM (SFU Radio), CITR Radio 101.9 FM (UBC Radio), Youth Third World Alliance, Camobear Records, Boomtown Records, Beatstreet Records, Redcat Records, LiveMusicVancouver.com, Imagination-Treetrunk, and Dreameyes Entertainment, FOCCED
