Dear Friends:

On November 25th, 2004, we lost a close friend and a true internationalist,
Pat Newton.  Pat had fought a difficult battle with brain cancer for nine
months before he passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was one of the
early and true vanguards in the Palestinian solidarity movement in Canada.
Pat personified the meaning of international solidarity, and supported the
struggle of the Palestinian people consistently for over 20 years. He was
the secretary of the Canada Palestine Association www.cpavancouver.org and
played an active role in organizing and advancing the Palestinian solidarity
movement in Canada on all levels. He was a founding member of the Voice of
Palestine radio show www.voiceofpalestine.ca that started broadcasting on
Co-Op Radio on September 2, 1987 and was the technical operator for the
radio show for most of the 17 years it has been on the air. Pat was also
active in the trade union movement, and was a shop steward with CUPE Local
15 at Vancouver City Hall for many years.
In recognition of his silent, tireless and dedicated work for the
Palestinian cause, the Canada Palestine Association has set up a one-year
scholarship in Patrick Newton's name at BirZeit University, near Ramallah in
the West Bank. The scholarship will take care of everything for one year for
a student from one of the Palestinian refugee camps. The scholarship is part
of the Challenge Fund program at Bir Zeit (see below), and you can read more

We will need $2500 US for one year for the scholarship, approximately $3000
Cdn.  If we receive more than $3000, then we will try to raise enough for a
second scholarship for the following school year.

The Near East Cultural and Educational Foundation (NECEF) has already agreed
to endorse the project, and will give out tax receipts for donors to this
scholarship fund. NECEF is a Canadian NGO that has done extensive
humanitarian work in the Palestinian territories.
We in the Canada Palestine Association and the Voice of Palestine urge you
to donate generously to Pat's Scholarship Fund, so as to recognize his
selfless efforts on behalf of the Palestinian people, and also to keep his
name alive for a long time to come.

Please make a note on the cheque that it is for the Pat Newton scholarship
fund.
