*** PRESS RELEASE - August 23, 2005 *** 

On August 22nd, ultra-right republican televangelist Pat Robertson called for the US government to assassinate Hugo Chávez, the democratically elected and widely supported President of Venezuela.  He claimed that Chávez is promoting communism and "Muslim extremism" and that "taking him out" would cost less than military intervention.  This statement not only undermines the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people, but incites hatred and racism.  If assassination of a democratically elected president is not terrorism, then what is?  The US Government must immediately make an apology, denouncing Robertson's ignorant and inflammatory remarks.  This is the only way for the US government to save face in this situation, and is necessary if they are ever to be taken seriously in their opposition to terrorism of all kinds.
