Stop the Canadian War Drive! Self-Determination for Indigenous Nations in
Canada!
Just under one month ago, on July 14, the Canadian government announced the
dispatch of another 2000-strong troop force to Afghanistan, mainly in
Kandahar province, by February 2006. Many people were shocked by Chief of
Defense, General Rick Hillier's racist, war mongering statements about the
people of Afghanistan, meant to stir up fear in people in Canada in order to
gain support for the move. For the antiwar movement, they were long-awaited,
honest admissions of the true nature of Canada's "peacekeeping" forces.
Hillier called Afghans "detestable murderers and scumbags" and said that
they want to rob from people in Canada, and therefore the Canadian military
had to go there to "kill people". Not one statement in opposition came from
any of the main political parties, showing their complicity and approval of
the criminal war and occupation in Afghanistan, all to serve the interests
of and for the benefit of the wealth of the Canadian ruling class. Major
newspapers are still coveirng the Canadian government's continued
justifications for this new offensive as they dispatch more and more troops
from cities and towns across Canada. Over 600 troops have already left since
July 14.
This year's the Canadian government increased the military budget by 12.8
billion dollars, effectively doubling it, to facilitate and enforce the
Canadian government's racist war on the people of Afghanistan in order to
steal the wealth of their country. Meanwhile, in the last five years, the
government has made drastic cuts to welfare, womens services, education,
and other social services that are the right of every oppressed person in
this country. On July 14, the Canadian government, through Gen Hillier,
fired off the first round in their new plan to increase Canada's power and
prominence on the world stage, increasing troop strength and funding for
their war, without a shred of consultation with, democratic process or
representation of the interests or wishes of regular working people in this
country.
Since July 14 and the Canadian governments announcement of the new troop
deployment, MAWO has organized two protest pickets at the Armed Forces
Recruitment Center, bringing out dozens of people in opposition to the
increased brutality of the Canadian war drive. Working and poor people in
Canada do not support this war drive. Students, young people, immigrants and
refugees do not support the intensifying of the occupation and the attacks
on people in Afghanistan.
The call is made again, to all those who are against this increased drive
for war, destruction and imperialist profits, to come to the streets in a
show of opposition and a show of what we represent, the interests and needs
of all oppressed people in Canada, Afghanistan and around the world. On
Thursday August 11 we will demand Canada Out of Afghanistan NOW! Stop the
Canadian War Drive! Self Determination for Indigenous Nations in Canada!
Money for jobs, health care, schools, housing and not for war!
