Re: "Symbol of Palestinian identity embraced dream of a homeland" by John
Roby
Aside from many distortions in the story about Arafat's responsibility for
the failure of the Camp David in July 2000, the following statement in
Roby's feature is historically incorrect.
"In 1982, Israel went after Arafat and the PLO, invading war-torn Lebanon
because the PLO was using it as a base for deadly attacks on Israel."
In July 1981, the US envoy Philip Habib brokered a ceasefire agreement
between Israel and the PLO. It is well documented that the PLO abided by
this agreement until the Israeli bulldozer Ariel Sharon decided to "destroy"
the PLO, with the green light that the US secretary of state Al Haig gave to
Israel at the time.
Inaccuracies like the one in your story give Israel a revised historical
cover for its invasion of Lebanon.
