For Immediate Release
Date: July 23rd, 2004

Day of Action Against the Occupation of Iraq!
US/UK OUT OF IRAQ!
SELF-DETERMINATION FOR ALL OPPRESSED NATIONS!

Saturday July 24, 3pm
Vancouver Art Gallery
(Georgia and Howe)

On July 24th 2004 Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) will take
to the streets with the Vancouver anti-war movement to expose the lie that
the occupation of Iraq is over. The rally will take place at 3pm at the
Vancouver Art Gallery. From there, participants will march to the US
consulate. Protestors in Vancouver will join in solidarity with people in
Iraq and all over the world as part of the global anti-war movement to
demand US/UK Out of Iraq and for self-determination for people in all
oppressed nations.

160 000 US, UK and Coalition troops are still stationed on the ground in
Iraq. The people of Iraq are seeing no real difference between the previous
Coalition Provisional Authority under the foreign occupying troops and their
new “sovereign” interim government. MAWO challenges that if anything has
changed in the month since the “handover” it has been for the worse for the
people of Iraq.

Nasim Sedaghat, a MAWO organizer explains: “Just this last week there was an
air strike on Fallujah by US forces which was endorsed by the Iraqi interim
government. What kind of government endorses a foreign power bombing its own
people?”

Kira Koshelanyk, MAWO Co-Chair, explains the event: “We will protest in
solidarity with the Iraqi people. They are maintaining the resistance
against war and occupation in their country with every day struggle that
inspires the anti-war, anti-occupation movement around the world. We have to
focus on war and occupation now more than ever. Also, we need to make the
essential link to the demand of self-determination for all oppressed
nations, including Iraq.”

The rally program will feature speakers from many different communities from
the lower mainland with representatives from the United Muslims Association,
the Peace and Justice Commission of the Anglican Church, and the Pakistani
Canadian Muslim Association. Other speakers will represent the Indigenous
community, youth and student leaders and organizers from Vancouver and a
guest speaker from the Korean Student Movement Against War.
