On August 24th newscasts reported that AC-130 gunships had launched a brutal assault against the Imam Ali mosque in Najaf. This attack comes two months after the US "Handover" of power in Iraq, and after two months of killing and criminal destruction by US and occupation forces across Iraq. 

The past weeks are only the latest assaults in an 17-month long illegal war and occupation. Since the first aeriel bombings and attacks on March 19th 2004, US-UK forces have become increasingly desperate in their fight for control of Iraq, and have failed to stabilize the occupation. 

In response to the latest round of shooting, killing and destruction, the people of Iraq have been waging a heroic resistance of protests, strikes, mass marches and armed attacks. Across Iraq this week, hundreds of thousands chanted "Allawi is a puppet!" "US-UK Out!" 

It is the human duty of all of us around the world to oppose this war and occupation and the criminal attack and destruction of Iraqi cities and Muslim holy places.
