Bus Riders Union
Taking it to TransLink, Taking it to the Streets.
This fall the Bus Riders Union campaign to fight transit racism and
win back the Night Owl buses kicks into high gear. In late September
we’ll be releasing a document based on our grassroots research on the
impacts of the Night Owl cuts. Based on 18 months of organizing and
over 75 “Public Transit Rights Violation” forms – testimonials filled
out by bus riders in their own words. This document refutes once and
for all the TransLink claim that ‘no one really needs the night owl
buses’ and shows clearly who relies on access to late night service:
low-wage workers, many of them immigrants and refugees, and most of them
women and youth.
In early October we’ll be taking this document and our anger and
energy to the TransLink board meeting and demanding an immediate
restoration of the Night Owl buses. We’re calling on all allies and
activists to stack this meeting and force TransLink to respond to the
needs of the working class and marginalized people of this region.
We’re also working to contribute to building a broad and
international movement for social and economic justice. On September
10th we’ll be hosting a public forum on “building anti-imperialist
practice from the ground up” and presenting a skit about the WTO
produced in partnership with the Group of Friends and Relatives of
Political Prisoners in Mexico. And on September 28 we’ll join the world
in marching against war and the occupations of Iraq, Palestine and
Afghanistan.
Finally on October 11 our fall campaign will culminate with a March
for Economic Human Rights! For our communities’ right to jobs, housing,
healthcare, education and transit.
