[antiwar-van] Petition for Peace

Dear Friends,

In response to forwarding the notice from the November 17th Coalition for
Peace from Jef Keithley I have received the above attachment (secure) with a
petition for peace. A text copy of it follows. It is another good initiative
to involve people to take a stand against Bush's war, and I hope it is of
some use to you:



To the Honourable Bill Graham, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the House of
Commons:

We the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the
Government of Canada to renew the presence of Canada in the international
arena as a nation that stands for peace. Within the present conditions of a
U.S. led war against Iraq looming, we call upon the Government of Canada to
uphold the principles of the UN Charter, specifically:

i) that "All Members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful
means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice,
are not endangered. (Article 2.3 of the UN Charter)

ii) that "All Members shall refrain in their international relations from
the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political
independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the
Purposes of the United Nations. (Article 2.4 ibid)

iii) that "The (U.N.) Organization is based on the principle of the
sovereign equality of all its Members." (Article 2.1 ibid)

Based upon these principles, we call upon the Government of Canada to:

i) Oppose the current danger of a U.S. led war against Iraq

ii) Refuse to support or participate in such a U.S. led war against Iraq

iii) Hold the Security Council accountable to the UN Charter and to the will
of the majority of Members of the United Nations

iv) Champion the cause of peace in international relations based on the U.N.
principles of the sovereign equality of all countries, non-interference in
the internal affairs of other countries, and the peaceful settlement of
international disputes.
