Israeli Soldier Against the  Occupation Speaks in Vancouver

Elad Lahav, is a 27 year old staff sergeant and battalion commander in the
Israeli Defence Forces infantry. He is refusenik #351 of Ometz Lesare -
the Courage to Refuse, a growing movement of Israeli officers and
soldiers, many of whom have spent several years serving in the IDF, who
have arrived at the personal decision that they can no longer in good
conscience do military service in Israeli - occupied Palestine in the West
Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Elad is a "selective" refuser, committed to defending his country's
legitimate right to security within Israel's internationally recognized
pre-1967 borders, while refusing to participate in an illegal, immoral and
oppressive occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. He has recently finished
a 28 day jail sentence for his refusal to serve in the Occupied
Territories. He is one of 45 men who have gone to prison for refusing to
serve in the occupation. He is one of 435 Israeli refuseniks, prepared to
go to jail in defense of their position expressed in the following
statement of the refusal movement:

1. We, reserve combat officers and soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces,
who were raised upon principles of Zionism, sacrifice and giving to the
people of Israel and to the State of Israel, who have always served in the
front lines, and who were the first to carry out any mission, light or
heavy, in order to protect the State of Israel and strenghten it

2. We combat officers and soldiers who have served the State of Israel for
long weeks every year, in spite of of the dear cost to our personal lives,
have been on reserve duty all over the Occupied Territories, and were
issued commands and directives that had nothing to do with the security of
our country, and that had the sole purpose of perpetuating our control
over the Palestinian people. We, whose eyes have seen the bloody toll this
Occupation exacts from both sides.

3. We, who sensed how the commands issued to us in the Territories,
destroy all the values we had absorbed while growing up in this country

4. We, who understand now that the price of Occupation is the loss of the
IDF's human character and the corruption of the entire Israeli society

5. We, who know that the Territories are not Israel, and that all
settlements are bound to be evacuated in the end

6. We hereby declare that we shall not continue to fight this War of
the Settlements.

7. We shall not continue to fight beyond the 1967 borders in order to
dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people

8. We hereby declare that we shall continue serving in the Israel Defense
Forces in any mission that serves Israel's defense.

THE MISSIONS OF OCCUPATION AND OPPRESSION DO NOT SERVE
THIS PURPOSE---AND WE SHALL TAKE NO PART THEM.

Surprise Best Seller Blames U.S. -New York Times; May 4, 2002

"9-11," as the volume is titled, analyzes the attacks from the distinctive
perspective that Professor Noam Chomsky has honed in more than a dozen
books. While the attacks were "horrifying atrocities," he writes, "we can
think of the United States as an innocent victim only if we adopt the
convenient path of ignoring the record of its actions and those of its
allies."

The United States, he asserts, is "a leading terrorist state," basing his

Picket For Palestine &  Media Balance

On Sunday, May 5, at 5 pm, gather at the Four Seasons Hotel for a picket
to protest the appearance of CanWest Global's Israel "Izzy" Asper and
former Canadian "Ambassador" to Israel, Norman Spector, at a fund-raising
dinner for the Hebrew University. The pro-Israeli bias and media
censorship of CanWest Global has been well-documented and amounts to
blatant support for Israeli war crimes. CanWest Global owns 14 major
papers across Canada, including the Times "Capitalist," the Vancouver Sun
and the Province. Former "ambassador," Norman Spector, appears regularly
in print and TV media, advocating total support for Israeli policies.
